I’m just now getting over my cold. Ugh. I’ve been ignoring my blog so that I could recuperate. And by “recuperate,” I mean, “take naps and watch the travel channel.”

But I have all sorts of blog fodder now! Thanks to harassment from a few people to whom I am related, I’ll go straight to Memorial Day.

We started the day out at Lil’s house where we had a delicious breakfast and awaited the parade. Marissa was her usual exuberant self.

And it showed.

I had to do a whole lot of harassing to get a picture of just my three pictures. They were all, “Have Jake take a picture of all four us! blah blah blah” but I insisted that I wanted a picture of just the three of them first, and that we could take group pictures later. Sometimes you just gotta stand by your guns so that you’ve got appropriate pictures to put on your blog.

Then I made my sisters pose for individual portraits while I coached them with helpful suggestions like, “Emote! EMOTE!”

Here, April marvels at tiny petals delicately raining from the sky. You would never know that Marissa and Jake were furiously shaking branches. Well, you wouldn’t know that if Marissa’s arm wasn’t in the picture…

Lil really has the emoting thing down pat. Very… expressive.

My sister weren’t the only ones called to model.

Some were more thrilled than others.

My birthday was good. But then I got sick. I’ve got some sinus thing and have been stuffy, achey and sneezy for the past couple days.

The family friends for whom I work left town for a week, putting me in charge of 12 of their horses. In other words, the rare moments when I’m not sniffling, sneezing or blowing my nose are filled with cleaning stalls and tossing hay and grain at large, angry beasts.

Also, I’ve been watching the Travel Channel a lot. A lot.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “KALIN! There are only three more days until you turn twenty-two and you are leaving us without updates as to the current conditions surrounding The Festival of Kalin.”

The local folks are getting excited about The Festival. The menu is coming together nicely and consists of:

Grilled Chicken Breasts & Hamburgers
Homemade Bread
Parmesan asparagus
Green Beans
Some type of fruit
Some type of cake/pie/cobler
Homemade ice cream

Sounds pretty fantastic, eh? Lil is making the bread, chicken breasts and ice cream. My other sisters are notably not going to be coming to my birthday celebration, being too busy with their lives to spend time with their beloved youngest sister.

Also, my other sisters were both in the area recently and did not come to visit me, their beloved youngest sister, for even a little while.

But that’s ok, because they made a point to visit me, their beloved youngest sister, when I was away at school.

Oh wait.

Bradley has a highly unfortunate skin condition lately that has resulted in him losing a lot of hair. As a result, he’s racked up quite a vet bill, has enough medicine to open his own pharmacy, and slightly resembles a raptor.

He’s still my Beautiful Bradley Boy, though.

On the other end of the spectrum is this little piglet.

If he was a piglet, he would probably be a Spotted Poland China.

I learned that at school.

Party Crasher

I was out in the yard today, pondering the fact that it’s only one week until I turn 22 (hint hint hint hint). I was taking some artsy pictures of all the blooming stuff in our yard, like this:

And this:

And this:

I was about to go get introspective with a dandelion when I heard a ruckus and looked up to see…

What the heck?

Ohh. Someone has gotten out of his pasture and is rampaging around the property.

I got him contained, took off his blanket (since the chill had finally left the air) and took some pictures of him in his pasture. I’ll post those later, though.

Meanwhile, back to pondering the fact that there are only seven days until the 21st of May, the day on which I turn 22 years old (because it’s my birthday).

My Maul Ball

One of the things I miss most about being at school is being able to go out and spend time with Mauler. He’s such a sweet, cuddly dog.

Upon seeing me for the first time in over a month, he began serenading me with a song entitled, “I Thought You’d Left Forever (But I’m Glad To See I Was Incorrect in this Assumption).”

He and Stella must be tied up for now because they refuse to stay behind their underground electric fence, and were it not for being tied up, they would be rampaging around the neighborhood, killing cats and laying on small children in an effort to be cuddled.

Mauler loves kids. One time I took him to my nephew’s soccer game, and several younger siblings of players came over to pet him. At one point he was laying on the ground along with four children who were petting him and touching his paws, and he was happy as could be. One mother came up to claim her child and admonish it for physically embracing a strange dog, but she paused long enough to ask his name.

“Uhmmmm… This is… Mo,” I answered. I felt it would have been awkward to say, “What dog? Oh that one, the one with his head burrowed in your child’s arm pit? That’s Mauler. He got his head stuck in a trap once but don’t worry, he’s very mentally stable.”

My Apologies

Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off

I know, I know, I’m terrible. I get you all addicted to my charming humor and subtle wit and then I just up and don’t update my blog. It’s cruel of me and I apologize.

I’ve had pretty good reasons, though, involving:
1) Finals week (back to back finals starting at 7:30AM)
2) Photographing a horse show
3) Sleeping for 16 hours at a time
4) Celebrating Mother’s Day
5) Celebrating the end of the semester
6) Celebrating the graduation of friends
7) Drinking a terrible margarita.

More later, I promise!
