Getting Ready
Filed Under horse shows, horses, tennessee walkers | 4 Comments
Horse show season has officially started, which has me super excited. I’ve spent the last few weeks mulling over what direction I wanted to take my photography this year. I was torn between trying to get more work as the center ring photographer, focusing on candid shots at shows, or doing more farm shoots. The indecision kind of built up in such a way that prompted me to decide to go all out and do it all. This, in turn, has prompted the purchasing of a new professional-grade lens, external flash and an upgrade to my camera body.
Speaking of bodies, I died upon figuring out the cost of all this, but luckily Bradley was close to the defibrillator and I’m ok now. The old adage “You have to spend money to make money” is true, and I think these new additions are not only necessary, but will pay for themselves fairly quickly (I hope & pray this is true, at least). I’m pretty excited for what this spring/summer/fall holds, photography-wise.
With all that in mind, here’s a small selection of random images I liked from last show season!

Last night was a bizarre night.
1. Lil and I hung out. Lil had taken a nap in preparation and drunk some caffeine, so she was peppy. Normally she is asleep for the night by 4:30PM. I, the very definition of a night owl, had only gotten 3 hours of sleep the night before and had just made the 5 hour trek home, so I was dragging.
2. I ate alligator. This isn’t actually all that bizarre, since it’s what I usually get at our favorite Cajun restaurant. I guess the bizarre part comes from me ordering the mini hurricane instead of the full-sized hurricane.
3. When Lil and I were shopping, I was trying on some jeans when I discovered what is believed to be urine in the dressing room I was in. Luckily, this was not a tactile discovery and I escaped relatively unscathed except for the deep emotional scars.
4. It was Piecey’s 14th birthday. I forgot to tell anyone about it, though, so it was kind of like that 16 Candles movie. Except the Jake Ryan character was played by a large Appaloosa mare.

The End is Here

Alas, all good things must end.
Today is the last day of National Ag Week.
To celebrate, we aggies wore some new shirts:
Doc always talks about how he should be Emperor of the World, so we decided to campaign for him. The t-shirts were a surprise. Someone left one in his office for him this morning, so he thought he was the only one to get it. He was going to surprise us by wearing it, but then he came to class and found that almost all of us were wearing them.

Justin and Becca are helping model.

I don’t know whose idea it was to use a picture of his head for the “o” but I crack up every time I see it.

Sigma Alpha ran penny wars all week. Each ag professor had a jar, and people put money in (silver for positive, pennies for negative) because the “winner” had to wear this cow costume all day Friday. The money is being donated to Heifer International, so that was a good reason to donate (as if vengeance for all those tests wasn’t enough). This is our Ag Business prof who won by a landslide. He’s pretty happy about it, I’m sure.

As of tomorrow (technically later today, I guess), I get to go on Easter break! Which really only constitutes having no classes on Monday, but hey, I’ll take it.
Rumor has it there’s a sister hang-out in the works. Maybe. I might have ruined that one by forgetting to call Lil back, but hopefully not.
Since we’re all getting together, we can probably be found performing some of our favorite moves, like those found in this recording of the last sister hang-out time:
I know you are saying, “Kalin, you only have three sisters. So how are there six people dancing in your video?”
The other two are our parents.

Byoooo Byoooo!

What a glorious day! Today marks the first time in my college career that St. Patrick’s Day and the kick off of National Ag Week have aligned.
Byooo byoooo byoo!
(That’s the sound of me using an air horn for effect.)
I actually celebrated St. Patty’s with my family on Saturday. We consumed a lot of corned beef and other delicious foods, including this beauty:

Lil made this delicious cake out of everything that normal people give up for Lent. It even had a 4-leaf clover on it and was covered in green, meaning I automatically loved it.

It got a resounding thumbs up for the family, except for the fact that we were all lounging around on the ground after consuming half of our body weight in delicious celebratory food and could not actually raise our arms or thumbs to give it a thumbs up (please note that this picture was taken before the cake eating, which is what sent all of us into a coma).
The highlight for the celebration, though, is the Leprechaun Basket. This is a tradition that is probably unique only to our family. My Mom gets a huge basket and fills it with various green treasures that have strings attached to them. A blanket is put over the basket and everyone chooses a string. We get to trade with people who get things that we want and one person lucks out over everyone.

The person who pulls out the pot o’ gold not only gets to keep the money inside, they also get to keep whatever prizes were not pulled out by other family members.
This year was my first year for getting the pot o’ gold. Lil usually gets it because she plans pregnancies around St. Patty’s Day so that she can pull multiple strings for her young children. This year I got to gloat and yell at her to look with her eyes, not with her hands when she was perusing what was left in the basket.
So that was that fun!
And then, I come back to school and it’s National Ag Week. I celebrated that by attempting to lead a slightly sheep up some stairs on our campus in order to get to the petting zoo where her lamb was being taken.
It turns out that sheep don’t lead up stairs.
I love National Ag Week. It’s so educational.
